Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion Project (EDIP)

The EDIP Project was a three-year program devoted to accelerating investment in Palestinian economic sectors that foster rapid economic growth and the creation of around 500,000 jobs to accomodate the unemployed and new entrants to the labor market. The EDIP approach was structured to leverage USAID resources in stimulating private investment that lead to new jobs, exports, sustainable market linkages, business support, and enabling services. EDIP’s primary goals and strategic approach were to increase firm competitiveness by providing linkages to markets and technology and to strengthen Palestinian institutions and business-enabling environments by strategically addressing success factors defined by investors and firms as especially critical to the growth of specific value chains.

EDIP created partnerships with successful Palestinian businesses to accelerate business growth through access to technology, markets, and equity capital. The project focused on developing those Palestinian sectors with the most potential for rapid economic growth and employment: agribusiness, specialty foods, tourism, ICT, and stone and marble. To strengthen the targeted sectors, EDIP collaborated with industry associations to deliver technical assistance with the help of small grants. EDIP promoted Palestinian products in the US, EU, Gulf States, and other markets via trade shows and business-to-business conferences in order to attract private investment.

Among other activities, EDIP:

  • intensively researched the West Bank’s ability to meet global market demand for tourism, stone and marble, ICT, agribusiness, and specialty food;
  • organized the Industry and Economic Growth Forum in Jericho, where Palestinian businesses, government leaders, and industry associations identified the most promising economic sectors to guide EDIP priorities;
  • promoted tourism throughout the West Bank with "fam trips" for travel agents and journalists to boost the region's image and encourage improvements to tourist infrastructure;
  • supported Palestinian Pavilions at the Fancy Food Show (specialty foods), Coverings (stone and marble), GITEX, and EXPOTECH (ICT);
  • hosted Google training sessions in Ramallah, where Palestinians learned tools for e-commerce and networked with others in the industry;
  • paired with Palestine Polyechnic University to design a targeted IT training-of-trainers program to give IT consultants the skills to deploy cloud computing solutions; and
  • assisted 591 Palestinian firms in the undertaking of new market linkage activities, and directly supported  1,543 firms under all EDIP interventions—these assisted firms are now exporting more than $45 million in agricultural exports.
