Bulgaria Labor Markets Project

Client: United States Agency for International Development

2001-2007, SEGIR FS

USAID/Bulgaria Mission Director Michael Fritz (far right) dubbed the Labor Market "one of the most successful USAID partnerships."USAID/Bulgaria Mission Director Michael Fritz (far right) dubbed the Labor Market "one of the most successful USAID partnerships."To expand the supply of skilled, knowledge-based labor in Bulgaria, CARANA established 24 university career centers to reach more than 150,000 students and collaborated with a local partner, JobTiger, to create the Business Foundation for Education, which continues development of a nationwide career facilitation system.

To tap potential employees, CARANA launched two websites, the first of which, www.staj.bg, led to more than 4,000 internships in one year alone. The second site, www.kakvidastanem.bg, enabled students to connect the subjects they study to career opportunities in different occupations and calculate the investment in their education and its potential return. Both sites remain active resources for employers and job-seekers in Bulgaria today.

We created supply chain management programs to enhance the competitiveness of hundreds of collaborative organizations and companies. We promoted the career consultant profession through inclusion in the new national occupations classifier, the introduction of the nation’s first master’s program in career development at Rousse University, the first national conference of career consultants in education, and the establishment of a representative office of the National Board of Career Counselors (NBCC Bulgaria), responsible for the certification program used to train career consultants.
