CARANA Intranet Search Instructions

CARANA Intranet Search Engine allows searching through the Arlington office shared drive contents. It uses Google search technology to index CARANA shared drives. The following is a brief overview of the search interface (scroll down for instructions.)

Enter your keywords (separated by spaces) in the search field. You can search for phrases by enclosing them in quotation marks. Keep in mind that the order in which the terms are typed will affect the search results. To restrict a search further, just include more terms.
Select the content area that you wish to search from the drop-down list (e.g., Resume_Database or R_Drive.)
Press the Search CARANA Intranet button.
The search results are presented in the format similar to what Google produces. For example, the number of documents found and the search time is displayed.
By default, the results are listed by relevance using Google proprietary algorithm. You can change the ordering to be by date, most recent documents displayed first.
The search results are clickable links that lead to the source document. The documents that open when you click on a link are copies, and if you need to make changes to the source document, you will need to access the original via the shared drive.
A very convenient feature of the search results is the Text Version link, which is generated for all Word, Excel, and other non-text documents. It shows your document in a plain text format with your keywords highlighted. This feature is especially useful for resume searches, because it provides the context for the keywords.
Frequently the initial search gives just the most relevant (from the search engine viewpoint) results. Pressing "repeat the search with the omitted results included" will show the complete results.

You can also use the Advanced Search link at the top of the search page to provide additional parameters for your search request.
For security purposes, the access to the search engine is restricted to the Arlington office network. You have to be physically there to perform searches.
