In late May, the Ecuadorean Committee for Regional and Economic Development (CEDET for its Spanish acronym), which the Productive Network helped form in early 2008, launched its web portal and hosted its first online membership meeting. CEDET is a national organization that brings together the country's many regional development agencies, totaling more than 180 representatives of businesses, civil society, academia, and local government. In future, virtual meetings will save members travel and logistics expenses and allow for timely discussions. With ongoing assistance from the Productive Network, CEDET has evolved into an authoritative resource for economic development, having been selected by the Government of Ecuador to manage projects worth a total of $1.4 million throughout the country. Such projects include industry mapping in the province of Loja, promoting a government program that offers technical and financial assistance to benefit small producer associations, and helping operate a trade network that will create one-stop shops and share commercial databases with export businesses. CEDET recently attended the First Congress of Latin American Local Development Agencies held in Medellin, Colombia and is a founding member of the Latin American Network of Regional Development Networks.
